 Expanding the Undo functionality to apply to formatting changes would be
 an enhancement, it isn't a bug as such.

 Which protocol were you seeing the inability to set alternating colors on?
 I'm guessing MSN (which only supports formatting the whole message and not
 applying different formatting to different parts of it).

 You can't select non-contiguous text ranges, that is pretty standard for
 text selection  - I'm not aware of any program that does that.
