 While this particular behavior is indeed common on IRC, it is annoying to
 other users, and as such we are not likely to implement it.  Changing a
 nick to |Away announces to every user in every channel you are idling in
 that you have gone away; in many cases, only a small number of those users
 care.  (Consider that one could be idling in a large channel like #pidgin,
 or a huge channel such as one of the distro channels -- that |Away is
 forwarded to hundreds of users who are not concerned about your state, in
 such an instance.)

 The IRC protocol has an actual away mechanism, which we use.  Users who
 are interested in your state can fetch your whois record, which includes
 away information.

 A plugin could certainly be written to effect this, but we will not be
 providing it.
