 Yes, dragging by the infopane works.  Was not obvious to me, but I've only
 been doing this computer stuff for 25 years, and only been using
 gaim/pidgin for about four.  :-)

 Yes, my "New conversations" method is indeed "last created window", which
 either is the default or I set long ago and forgot.  Oops.  But a "single
 window" New conversations(vs Placement?) option would likely work well for
 me; I detach tabs only rarely.

 Thanks for the comments.  Sorry for the errand "defect" report.  I did
 look in the FAQ...
