Comment:

 File a bug against NetworkManager asking for it to deal with your type of
 connection. In 0.17, it supposedly does phone tethering. If you're using
 an air card or something else, I don't know if it's supported. In the mean
 time, you can recompile Pidgin without NetworkManager support by passing
 --disable-nm to configure.
