Comment:

 What do you mean your friends can't see them? Do they not get the message
 at all? Are those characters missing entirely? Do they see boxes? Do they
 see them garbled in some other fashion? There is no ability to 'turn on
 UTF-8' in pidgin because pidgin is always UTF-8 internally (and over
 protocols that support that).

 What clients are your friends who have this problem using?
