Comment:

 Did you turn on the 'Escape closes conversations' preference in pidgin?
 That will over-ride the ctrl-w default, turning that preference back off
 should re-enable ctrl-w. If that wasn't the cause you can follow the
 directions in the
 [http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#HowdoIbindkeystrokestomenuitems
 FAQ] to rebind ctrl-w to the close menu item.
