 The problem with this idea, which has been suggested a number of times, is
 that many protocols do not allow buddies to exist in more than one group
 and as such this tag information could not be stored on the server for
 those protocols. Further, any storing of this sort of information will
 cause confusion when other clients are used as buddies may not be in the
 locations (groups) one would expect them to be. Personally, I think
 changing the default well-understood buddy list semantics with this extra
 complication is not a good idea. I do, however, think that an alternative
 buddy list view centered around tag grouping of buddies (and not
 constrained to a single vertical column) is a good idea and should
 certainly be pursued, I just don't think it belongs in the default pidgin
 buddy list.
