Comment (by vamonos):

It's worth pointing out that code HAS been contributed to fix this, on a
divergent fork called FunPidgin. The Pidgin developers simply don't want
 to include it.

It's no longer a question of effort or cost -- now it's one of control,
one entirely antithetical to the entire concept of open-source. There's no
apparent reason to take away manual resizing -- a feature obviously in
heavy demand -- but to exercise power over others. There's not even a
practical aesthetic argument for removing the user's ability to control
his own text box. It's the fat guy on the beach kicking over the skinny
guy's sandcastle just because he can.

I don't hate the developers -- in fact, I don't think they get nearly
enough credit, drawing attention only when they do something wrong.
Pidgin's a masterful piece of software, and I wouldn't be here now if I
didn't believe in it. But for all their hard work and hard-won successes,
some jackass is tarnishing their reputation with this personal vendetta
against distributed control. Quit it, and listen to the community. Please.
