 same problem here.
 Problem persisted even after downgrading pidgin, I had to downgrade the
 GTK as well to make it work again, therefore I would assume it to be a GTK
 issue. Also, pressing Ctrl+F opens the search box, but I can't type there
 any characters at all

 Tested on WinXP SP2
