 Just reverted back to the previous version of GTK+ (2.12.1 Rev B) and the
 problem went away.  I haven't noticed any other side affects either.  I
 suppose the searching widget in the latest GTK is broken for some reason.

 Sorry I should have clarified in my original ticket that it only accepts
 on letter.  After that it just sits there until it times out and goes away
 even if you're typing furiously on the keyboard.
