Comment (by tkl):
Reclarifying my prior statement, the exact thing I do not like this change
has to do with both "the movement is of the typing area is distracting or
visually jarring" and desktop window layout. When I originally stumbled
upon Gaim, it solved all my problems by providing a stable messaging
client as well as fitting well into my desktop layout for Linux. I use
Pidgin to communicate with various administrators around campus on a daily
basis.
Having the screen "jump" or resize internally is very eye catching. When
that happens, I know that some event has taken place I should review which
would catch me when it scrolled upward as I typed. This caught my eye
every time it scrolled upward. That's pretty much it in a nutshell for
the distraction part.
As for window layout, I am a left-side tab user for communication tabs.
I've already taken a hit from pidgin 2.2.1 -> 2.3.1 of losing abbreviated
tab identifiers. Now from 2.3.1 -> 2.4, I lost the ability to resize the
message input.
Combined together, this makes my desktop look like this if someone
contacts me directly:

to this when someone sends me an IM from an already existing chat:
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tkl/pidgin/desktop2.jpg
Now you should understand why I want to resize the text input window --
because when I could, I could make up for not being able to have
abbreviated tab identifiers by causing the window to reformat slightly so
as not to be so cramped into one small typing space. I would like to
trade the wasted non-abbreviated space for typing space.
So I guess in essence, I either want abbreviated tabs or the ability to
resize the internal window components back.
