 swbrown: If you are already looking around the history area because you
 are typing a new IM message then you shouldn't need to be 'visually
 monitoring' it for changes as you are almost actively looking at it. If
 you aren't already looking at the window then the input area size changes
 can't cause it to change size as you can't be typing into the input area.
 I'm really not at all sure what scenario you are talking about where the
 auto-resize is a problem the way you are stating.
