Comment (by dave314159):
One of the reasons I like Pidgin (though certainly not the most important)
is that it is visually appealing. If I am going to have to look at this
thing for many hours a day, I want it to look the way I want it to look.
For this reason (along with other, more practical considerations mentioned
above) I think the percentage-based solution seems to be the best.
One point that I'm not sure has been addressed here is that even if said
solution is implemented, people like their manual drag-handles. Setting a
numerical percentage in a preferences pane is simply less intuitive.
Perhaps we can have our cake and eat it too. I picture it like this: you
open up your IM window for the first time, and it looks like it currently
does (in v2.4) with a two-line mininmum. If you want to change the minimum
size of the input area, you right click on the input-area menu-bar and
select something to the effect of "resize input area." This would allow
you to adjust the size manually. Since Pidgin would only ever have to pay
attention to such resizing in that one instance, it seems to me that it
wouldn't (or would at least be less likely to) interfere with the auto-
resizing.
As for those of us who simply can't stand the auto-resizing, this seems
like the perfect place for a plugin (albeit one crafted carefully in
consultation with the pidgin devs to make sure it doesn't break anything
important in the process.)
