The whole point of my suggestions for changes to the autoresizing code is
so that you can do exactly what you used to do only instead of running
into scrollbars when you go over you get the (even just marginally) better
action of expanding. The point is not to allow you a smaller input size
then you want if you find the resizing annoying, it is to allow you a
smaller input size when you want to waste less space and see more history
when you don't mind the resizing and avoid the resizing (basically)
entirely when you don't want it by picking a default size that suits you.
By "jumping text in the received message pane" I'm assuming you mean the
fact that you find the history area moving to cause you to scan it for new
messages? If so, while I don't find that a problem myself (I suppose I
rarely talk to people who negate a message I am typing, one that is longer
than two lines mind you, by a new message), I can see how it would be
annoying and welcome any thoughts on how to mitigate the problem. The only
thought I have at the moment is a method I ran into while looking up
javascript stuff at work a couple weeks ago known as (among other things)
the Yellow Fade Technique[1] which is essentially a fading highlight on
changed text. This would mean that new IMs would get a fading
background/foreground/etc. highlight and text moved by the auto-resize
stuff would not. I don't know if that would help (or even if it is really
possible at the moment) but it is the only thought I have currently.
