 In what part of the authentication is pidgin sending the fqdn of your
 server? Do you have the fqdn input in pidgin as the Connect Server? The
 reason your build from source works is because you didn't build with Cyrus
 SASL support.

 If you are using Openfire you need to add the xmpp.fqdn property to
 Openfire with the fqdn of your host.

 If not please give as many details about where pidgin is sending the bare
 domain and where it is sending the fqdn (what is in the stream header,
 what is in the auth request, etc.). If you can post the Help->Debug Window
 XML output that would be of use (sanitize any DIGEST-MD5 data before doing
 so, but please base64 decode it yourself and post the digest-uri part of
 the challenge and the response with the rest of the debug data).
