Comment:

 pidgin does have code to count the number of buddies with the same alias,
 but it may only count toplevel buddies and not ones inside contacts (I'm
 not sure and don't have the time to look at the code that carefully). I'm
 not sure I agree that it should count the buddies in the contact as they
 are already merged and so not really at issue, though I don't feel
 strongly on this either way. I think Sean wrote the auto-merge code so I'm
 going to assign this to him.
