 I am using Ubuntu Hardy, so this is not a GTK+ Windows issue.

 My problem is with the dialogs themselves.  The problem is made worse by
 the fact they pop up in the opposite corner though.

 Ideally, I would like to get rid of the dialog pop-ups totally.  Push them
 inline to the contact list window and have the slide in or something.
