 xchat2, as an example, resizes the timestamp/nick column of its history
 area in a similar way. because most, if not all, protocols enforce a
 maximum nick length, there is a limit to how wide this column can ever
 grow (though that didn't occur to me before). consequently, reflows occur
 less often than it would appear at first glance. the minimum width should
 probably be whatever is necessary to display the "n people in room"
 message.

 the user list is useful if one wishes to see if another user is currently
 in a channel, without having to highlight that user. but there certainly
 may be a way to present the list other than a continuously-present column
 at the right side of the window.
