 And the main wiki page links to wiki:CHowTo. All that being said I have no
 idea what you meant by "Even something simple like pressing the scroll
 lock button twice when a message is received should solve it." unless you
 mean that would be enough indication for you in which case I would think
 just turning sounds on would be enough for you.
