 I think that will work well. Since the smiley's shortcut is set as the
 img's alt attribute, an XHTML-IM parser should ideally show that if it
 doesn't want show the image. The overhead will typically be quite small.
 I've been using some smileys I found in some "Smiley pack for Messenger",
 they are basically < 2 kB. When sending a message containing such a smiley
 to myself (taking a trip back and forth under the Atlantic) I can't say I
 can notice any difference from a text-only message. And at least in Psi
 and Gmail the other user still sees the shortcut.
