 The XMPP XEP uses <img/> tags in XHTML-IM to send inline images. So I have
 mapped the shortcut to the "alt" attribute.

 Perhaps there could be a warning if a user tries to use a predefined
 shortcut, but I'm not quite sure how that would work with multiple
 protocols. It would be strange if it was warning you about a protocol you
 don't use. On the other hand you could add an account using shortcuts as
 defaults for which you have defined custom emoticons.
 I guess it will be up to user to use unique shortcuts.
 Maybe default emoticons for which you have "overridden" the shortcut could
 be shown "greyed out" in the smiley selection dialog...
