Comment:

 This appears to be a problem with generation of the authentication data.
 Are you able to get or build a version of pidgin built with Cyrus SASL
 support and see if that is able to log in correctly?

 In Exodus did you need to provide it with any information other than
 username and password? Any authentication realm or authentication identity
 or anything?
