Comment:

 When you see boxes with numbers instead of characters that is a font
 problem, it means the friend it is working for is using a font you have
 (or isn't specifying a font and your default GTK+ font has the characters)
 and the friend it doesn't work for is specifying a font you don't have (or
 isn't specifying a font and your deafult GTK+ font doesn't have the
 characters). If you believe your default GTK+ font has the correct
 characters you can try ignoring incoming formatting and seeing if that
 fixes it, or you could try telling your friend to use a different font, or
 you could try installing whatever font your friend is using.
