 I didn't know Metacity was a crappy WM :-)...
 Nonetheless, I think the only solution for me for now is to place the
 buddy list on the right border of the screen (since the buddy list window
 position does get remembered), and let the conv window open in the
 position chosen by Metacity (left border)...

 What I do not understand is why all others gtk apps position get
 remembered by Metacity (the values are stored in gconf-editor keys) but
 Pidgin does not... It is like the conv window is not considered as a
 'child window' of the buddy list window but as a completely different and
 new window, thus it is not placed next to it but rather on top of it.
