 metacity is a special case since it is a crappy wm *by design* where the
 definition of crappy is as minimal as humanly possible so as to work best
 inside of GNOME. That conscious decision is one they are perfectly well
 allowed to make and one for which I cannot really fault them given their
 goals (I used to fault them for it, then I thought about it more and
 realized I can't).

 What GTK+ applications have their window positions remembered in gconf? Is
 your pidgin built with session management support (check Help->About)?
