 If it is built with it, and if it isn't "many" applications but just a
 few, then it isn't related. It could theoretically have been related if a
 number of applications remembered their positions and pidgin wasn't built
 with it. In that case it would have been possible that metacity/GNOME was
 using the sm support to get and remember window locations.
