Comment:

 pidgin should be fetching your buddy list from the server. If that is not
 happening that is not particularly a good sign (though it may just be a
 transient problem, but that sounds unlikely). There is a listhandler
 plugin you can find which may help but I don't think it was intended for
 this purpose either. What protocol(s) is this happening on?
