 I just downloaded the latest version of Pidgin.  It started showing
 duplicate entries in the buddy list so I deleted one listing.  Next time I
 started Pidgin the buddy was totally gone. I then used the Accounts menu
 option and for my AOL IM searched by email address found the buddy and
 selected Add.  It added the same account twice.
