 In fact we removed it from the preferences dialog exactly because we
 wanted to enhance usability. See [http://www.pidgin.im/~seanegan/cgi-

 reference. As I have stated each time this sort of idea comes up my main
 problem with bringing back such an option is that I cannot think of a
 useful generic interface for this sort of thing and *hate* the idea of
 adding a one-off yes/no checkbox for it (I hate the new escape closes
 conversations preference too but that has a good reason for it at least,
 GTK+ makes the normal way of doing that sort of thing impossible).

 Also, there is no "messing with weird config files" you can hand people a
 snippet in its entirety and tell them where to put the file and it will
 Just Work.
