 I tested as prescribed above, and Pidgin is still the only one to show re-
 display the window. I've found that if I re-add the notification-area
 applet after this test, all 8 show up again in the new instance of the
 notification area.

 It should be noted that the notification-area-applet, if it ever crashes
 (I've only observed this by ending the process from System Monitor),
 immediately displays a dialog asking if you wish to reload notification-
 area-applet. Upon reloading, all but Opera were still accessible from the
 tray.
