 i have the same wired behavior with Ubuntu (Intrepid) and pidgin 2.5.2.
 Set preferences "hide new conversations" to "always". Bug occurs only with
 one buddy (gtalk). Other buddies (also gtalk) work as expected, new
 conversations keep closed and only tray icon is blinking.
