Comment:

 I'm changing this ticket to a plugin request and putting it on the Plugin
 Suggested milestone.  If we manage to do the much-needed privacy api
 rewrite for 3.0.0, I'll try to remember to beat someone into addressing
 this somehow for that.  In the interim, anyone so inclined can feel free
 to write a plugin to handle this.
