 Every now and then the sound from sending and receiving IMs will
 completely stop working. It doesn't seem to be related to other
 applications which are using sound.
 What I have noticed is that when I Quit Pidgin it will play the sound as
 if I had just received an IM as it's quiting, so maybe there's some kind
 of deadlock in the thread that's playing the sound, which is released when
 resources are being cleaned up?

 I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 x64. Let me know if there's any additional
 information that would be useful.
