 Thanks for your answer. I adjusted gtkrc-2.0 as you suggested, and it
 helped a little, but only a little (as I can tell, it's by this "2" pixels
 of vertical-separator). Further reducing of expander-size didn't help.

 As I mentioned before, I thought the icons may be causing how this looks.
 So I added few fake images, and it shows it can be really it. Please check
 screenshot I added above (BuddyList_spacin_with_icons.png). It seems like
 there is space reserved for pictures, even there aren't any, which causes
 this large spaces when font is small.
