Comment:

 Ok, I'm reasonably positive that the current code is correct and the patch
 is wrong.

 The code is pretty straightforward and the free is correct, which means
 that the problem is elsewhere.

 It is really odd that `purple_util_fetch_url()` is returning NULL.
 What does the debug log say immediately prior to the crash?
