 Yes, sure, I did. The problem is that

 a) with Proxy: Pidgin tries to tunnel ALL traffic through the proxy (using
 CONNECT command), which my proxy does not allow.
 b) without Proxy: Direct connections to port 80 / 443 are not allowed.
