 Adium does this, and it's very nice.  Simply, if your buddy list is too
 small vertically to accommodate a new online contact, the list will resize
 by the necessary amount.  Ideally, this would of course be optional and
 could perhaps be provided by way of a plugin if the dev team thought it
 should stay out of main.
