 pidgin does not set a default outgoing font unless the user specifies one,
 and it certainly doesn't specify an old Windows specific font. Are you
 sure the user isn't choosing that font intentionally? Or at least choosing
 some font that WLM can't display directly and is substituting that font
 instead?

 pidgin users can certainly choose the font they want to send in outgoing
 messages, even for MSN as far as I know.
