 I don't know exactly why it didn't install before; pidgin was definitely
 not running,
 but I uninstalled the current pidgin installation completely, and ran the
 new install again,
 and it worked fine and ran to completion. So, I'm closing this bug. Many
 thanks for
 the suggestions!
