 In the first debug log you posted that error loading perl.so is not
 listed, is that message new or did you just miss it the first time? If
 that message shows up then loading perl.so failed and it shouldn't (to the
 best of my knowledge) be possible for it to cause anything to fail (as it
 couldn't even be linked in).

 A proper backtrace from this would likely be rather helpful, as would
 making sure you don't have multiple copies of pidgin, libpurple, or perl
 installed at the same time.
