 In GAIM 1.5.0, I didn't get a typing notification for any of my AOL
 buddies.  My GMail buddies showed a notification icon in the top-right
 corner as expected.

 So I tried on Pidgin 2.4.3-2/Debian Sid.  Same results, although typing
 notification for GMail users was switched to in-conversation lines.
