 The attached patch turns the one-time-check into a repetitive removal of
 preceding status/mode characters. Tangentially, this same solution might
 be used on bug #7415. Please tell me your opinion on both the patch and
 the possibility of refactoring both bugs into one common solution and I'll
 look into it.
