 After the fact, I note that I am on windows vista, and have a firewall,
 but no proxy. The firewalls are correctly configured, evidenced by the
 fact that after the reinstall, the msn account worked perfectly (once). I
 have not adjusted any internet accessibility options in between it working
 and not (a matter of minutes). It doesnt seem to be an isolated outage
 either. Other persons on our network (using the native msn client) connect
 perfectly.
