 Even in the best of circumstances, massaging messages containing
 formatting 'html' is not easy.

 Outgoing messages should be relatively standard, if they are not that is
 something which can likely be fixed up to a great degree without much
 difficulty.

 Keep in mind though that the formatting is likely UI specific in some
 respects, that is finch, pidgin, adium, etc. may or may not send the same
 formatting text for the same formatting output (though I would need to
 double-check this to be sure).

 What does your plugin do such that it needs to care about these
 differences anyway?

 Yes, with regards to the bonjour font tag that is exactly what I was
 thinking.

 As always, any patches to make things more equivalent would certainly be
 welcome.
