 And for me this seems to work over the XMPP-Console.

 For the global invisible like this:
 <iq from='bilbo at tolkien.lit/shire'
     id='inv1'
     type='set'>
   <invisible xmlns='urn:xmpp:tmp:invisible'/>
 </iq>

 I only get a <error code='503' type='cancel'>
