#7060: Error importing GAIM settings, Pidgin refuses to start at all

Hi. After updating Ubuntu, I noticed there is no GAIM anymore, but some
Pidgin IM client. When trying to start it, I get the following message,
 and after that, nothing.

"Pidgin havaitsi ongelmia siirrettäessä asetuksia ohjelmasta
/home/arttu/.gaim ohjelmaan /home/arttu/.purple. Tutki asiaa ja suorita
asetusten siirto käsin. Ilmoita tästä ongelmasta osoitteessa
 http://developer.pidgin.im/"

So now I'm reporting this problem to you as error message asked. Maybe you
should make it possible to start Pidgin, and then import settings inside
it, and not make it refuse to start if it can't import the settings for
 whatever reason.

Same error in English on different user on Windows machine:

 http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/1064
"Pidgin encountered errors migrating your settings from \\AUMLBRO-
 FS0003\Home$\ross.gayler\Application Data\.gaim to \\AUMLBRO-
 FS0003\Home$\ross.gayler\Application Data\.purple. Please investigate and
complete the migration by hand. Please report this error at
 http://developer.pidgin.im"

But I'm not on Windows (as I said Ubuntu, 8.04 HH). And I don't have
Offline folders, like some Windows users. And if you think this problem is
not worth fixing, do you really think all people come to your site, and
register to post bug reports? Probably not.

In some message (http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/453) were some of you
closed one report complaining about that import should be optional part,
not forced, the reason for closing was that there is no justification and
why wouldn't you want to import those settings? Isn't this a
justification, that the import just doesn't work? Or maybe some doesn't
want all his old settings transferred? Or maybe those settings are for
 some other user?
