 Thank you for your reply.

 As I was playing around with the global settings in the firewall to open
 more ports I ended up reinstalling the firewall with the very latest
 version, this seem to have fixed the problem. Can't believe I didn't try
 it from that end before, instead I've tried reinstalling many Pidgin
 versions.

 Anyway, I don't seem to get the giowin32.c:271 error anymore and my Pidgin
 has stopped freezing. So far so good, I'll get back with a complete debug
 log if I encounter it again.
