 The guys at Pidgin don't think that this is a bug, apparently.  The
 workaround suggested above must be done every once in a while when the
 synchronization screws up.

 I'd like to convince you all: '''this IS a bug'''.  Other messenger
 programs do not have this issue and neither should pidgin.

 I still have this issue in 2.5.5.  The only way to truly avoid it
 currently is to '''never move contacts between groups and never sign in
 MSN using pidgin on more than one computer EVER.'''
