Comment:

 Is this a personal computer or one run by a business/school/etc.? Many
 years ago the computers run by my University prevented pidgin (or anything
 else using GTK+) to install because the GTK+ installer had been flagged by
 the antivirus software as being a virus (because some virus had apparently
 used it). Might something similar be happening here?

 What are the md5sums of the installers you have downloaded?
