 I have a similar issue on Ubuntu 9.04 (UNR) with pidgin 2.5.8.

 I have uninstalled pidgin and reinstalled it.  I have removed the .purple
 directory from my home directory.  I have removed only the .icon files
 from the .purple directory.

 Only certain icons are missing (ie, the buddy status icons, manage
 accounts, and random icons from some of the menus).

 I have tried changing GTK themes at the OS level which had no impact.

 The facebook plug-in is installed.

 The problem started when the launcher icon was changed using alacarte.
